When it comes to versatile materials that blend durability, sustainability, and style, PMMA acrylic stands out as a top contender. Whether you know it as Plexiglass, Lucite, or simply acrylic, this material is making waves across various industries. But what makes PMMA acrylic so special?
What is PMMA Acrylic?
PMMA, or polymethyl methacrylate, is a transparent thermoplastic often used as a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass. First developed in 1928 and commercially introduced by the brand Plexiglass in 1933, PMMA acrylic has since become a staple in many applications due to its clarity, weather resistance, and ease of molding.
Thanks to its durability and sustainability, PMMA acrylic is used in a wide range of industries. In construction, it's a popular choice for windows, skylights, and partitions due to its strength and clarity. The automotive industry uses it for headlights and interior components because of its lightweight and durable nature. In the medical field, PMMA is used in devices like bone cement and dental prosthetics. And nowadays, it’s also a favorite in the world of (interior) design and fashion. From modern furniture to high-end jewelry, PMMA acrylic’s ability to be molded and colored makes it a designer’s dream material.
Durability of PMMA: Built to last.
One of the standout features of PMMA acrylic is its incredible durability. Like most materials, PMMA acrylic is susceptible to scratching. But unlike glass, which can easily shatter, PMMA is highly resistant to impact. In fact, it's up to 17 times more impact-resistant than traditional glass, making it a safer and more durable option.
Are you interested in using your House of Catch item outside of the house? PMMA acrylic is also resistant to UV radiation and weathering, which means it won't yellow or become brittle over time when exposed to sunlight. This makes it an excellent choice for outdoor. So let’s spice up the garden with a catchy and vibrant item - why not?
Sustainability: A greener choice.
In today's world, sustainability is more important than ever. With the launch of House of Catch we thought, and still think, that sustainability should be an important factor in our activities and production. That’s one of the reasons why we use this material. Although PMMA officially is a plastic, it is fully recyclable. During its recycling process, it can be broken down into components and then be used to remade new acrylic sheets without losing its quality. This closed-loop recycling process reduces the need for raw materials and minimizes waste, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Some smaller, but not less important, factors of the sustainability of PMMA - is that it is a lightweight material, which means it requires less energy to transport compared to heavier materials like glass. This reduces the carbon footprint associated with its transportation and installation. Additionally, its long lifespan and low maintenance requirements mean that products made from PMMA acrylic don't need to be replaced as often, further reducing environmental impact.
Did you know...
- Crystal clear: PMMA acrylic is known for its exceptional optical clarity, with a light transmittance of 92%, making it clearer than glass.
- Inspiring art and design: Famous artists like Salvador Dalí and Frank Lloyd Wright have used acrylic in their works.
- High-performance applications: PMMA acrylic is used in aircraft windows, submarine periscopes, and even the protective barriers on hockey rinks due to its durability and clarity.
